The rattan industry is not only a major source of employment and revenue for Southeast Asian countries but also serves as an important medium for sustainable and eco-friendly furniture. Recognizing the potential of this versatile material, Indonesian rattan manufacturer Sinar Sri Rejeki Utomo, in partnership with Awaken Koala Group, joined hands with CCAD students to create a new line of furniture for GRID Furnishings in Columbus, Ohio.

Lestari, a unique piece from this collaboration, incorporates classic rattan design and patterns with modern furniture inspirations to create a comfortable and sustainable sitting space. Selected for production among two other designs, Lestari is currently being manufactured in Indonesia. The design emphasizes the importance of maintaining traditional techniques while also pushing the boundaries of contemporary furniture design. Its production and sale will provide an important opportunity to promote environmentally conscious practices in the furniture industry while also showcasing the beauty and potential of rattan as a material.
